Hunger & Homeless

Hunger

"Hunger is a condition of a person, who does not have the physical or financial capability to eat sufficient food to meet basic nutritional needs for a sustained period."

Every 10 seconds, a child dies from hunger. Hunger kills more people each year than AIDS, malaria, and terrorism combined. 82% of hungry people live in countries with food surpluses, not food shortages. One in every eight people sleeps hungry each night. One third of the food produced worldwide is never consumed.

Apna Shelter India Foundation volunteers work to get surplus food from restaurants and the community so that it can be distributed to those in need. who hope, in their own unique way, to make a difference.

Through volunteers who live nearby, restaurants in and around Thane, for instance, will support the homeless population.

Our "APNAs" are mostly college students and young professionals who do this in their spare time. Homeless families, orphanages, patients from public hospitals, and elderly care facilities are among the less fortunate segments of society that we serve.

Our objective is straightforward: utilize food as a medium to end global hunger and bring out the best in humanity. The goal is to train self-sufficient volunteers across India who will take care of their neighborhood. And in the process, motivate those around us to assist those most in need.

The first time we distributed food, we realized that while it may feel good to help the less fortunate, doing so only once a week would not make a significant difference in a nation where millions of people are starving.

Hunger is a serious issue. Our deadline was yesterday, so we needed to reach more people, restaurants, and cities.
